20 tweets that explain why Theon Greyjoy is one of the best 'Game Of Thrones' characters

Sunday’s battle was the long-time-coming Battle of Winterfell, where we knew we’d be bidding farewell to a lot of characters…including Theon Greyjoy, because let’s be frank, the whole plan for him to personally guard Bran from the Night King was, uh, shaky at best.

Theon: “I’ll protect you”

Bran: *nods head*

Night King:

But even though we mostly knew Theon’s death was coming…

It didn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to a character who has motivated EXTREMELY COMPLICATED feelings throughout the series.

I just wanna shout out #TheonGreyjoy for his character arc.

He’s the ONLY character I truly wanted dead. More than Ramsay or Joffrey. I hated him.
But seeing him save Yara and hug Sansa was beautiful.

That being said, I’m ready to see his head roll today.#GoT

#TheonGreyjoy I hated you I felt sorry for you and then I loved you that’s a good character that will be missed

Woke up thinking about Theon Greyjoy

— Mani (@eliaamartells) April 28, 2019

‘Cause remember: This is the guy who betrayed the Starks back in Season 2, had two innocent boys killed and burned, waffled on helping Sansa escape her marriage to Ramsay Bolton, and jumped overboard when his sister was in danger.

theon greyjoy character is like a rolloercaster of feelings and emotions in #GOT we loved him, hated him, felt bad and compassion for him, wanted to kill him, disappointed, cheering him up, supported him, saw him as a coward, proud of him, forgiving him, loving him again.

— Rin (@rinJinx) April 28, 2019

Buttttttt also: He’s the guy who risked his life to help Sansa escape/reunite with her family at Winterfell, saved his sister Yara, and held off the wights long enough to help make **that** moment when the Night King was defeated possible.

you ever think about how this hug was the first genuine bit of affection/comfort sansa and theon had in years and cry yourself to sleep

Assuming his role as the big brother…

When Bran states that he wants to be in the Godswood, the major concerns are from Sansa, Arya and Jon, but the solution is offered by Theon, cause it’s what a (big) brother does #GameofThrones

Being truly himself again, at the place where his whole story started…

Theon arrived at Winterfell 4 times. Once as a hostageOnce as a turncloakOnce as Reek

And once as himself

— Petra Halbur (@PLHalbur) April 28, 2019

And finally being accepted at Winterfell as his home.

“everything you did brought you where you are right now, where you belong.. home.” theon greyjoy died as a good man at his home protecting his family 😭

Fans pointed out that not only was Theon’s character arc a powerful story of redemption…

Theon’s redemption from weak, traitorous boy to abused, pathetic Reek to “a good man” was truly remarkable and Alfie Allen was incredible. 👏😭 #got

…but it also challenged the idea that a hero could only be someone who’s never messed up.

without question, theon greyjoy had one of the finest character arcs in #GameofThrones – and one of the most painful stories to witness. yet he has shown us what a true hero is: not the man who never falls, but the man who always stands up again.

Jorah Mormont: redefined the loyalty.Lynna Mormont: redefined the courage.Theon Grejoy: redefined the redemption.

(And obviously, we just can’t rave enough about how wonderful Alfie Allen’s acting was throughout all of this!!)

This scene is so heroic & emotional . The pain on theon’s face is well crafted . The most well written & underrated character Theon Greyjoy , a tribute to actor Alfie allen #BattleofWinterfell #GameofThrones @HBO

So, honestly, we gotta pour one out for our man Theon Greyjoy…

(But also like…we wouldn’t be mad if someone could get the Drowned God to pull some strings for us? Y/N?)

theon stans on their way to make the drowned god resurrect theon

— han | theon’s not dead (@theonsgayjoy) April 28, 2019

me praying to the drowned god to ressurect theon if he dies tonight

— rachie (@sansatheons) April 28, 2019

Because at the end of the day, folks, we’ve never had a character quite like Theon Greyjoy, and we might never get another one like him again.

The last word Theon heard before the battle was “Home”.The last thing Bran told him before his death was “Thank you”.I loved him, I hated him, I forgave him and now I cry for him.

Ladies and gentlemen, stand up for Theon Greyjoy.#GameofThrones

And listen, what the ironborn say is true: What is dead may definitely never die — at least in our hearts.
