It’s been a long time since Game of Thrones ended but it still is an extremely popular TV series and definitely one of the most popular series of all time. Even though the ending wasn’t liked by most of the fans, there’s no denying that overall the series was a masterpiece. There were a lot of things about the series finale that the fans didn’t like, for example the way the plot was rushed, characters becoming monotonous. However, the most controversial part of the series finale was the shocking twist where Daenerys Targaryen became the villain.
However, if you properly look at a number of events from the earlier seasons of the show, there have been many incidents that have foreshadowed that one of the main heroes of the show would end up turning into the main villain. We are going to focus on 5 such important events from the show in this article. Before we start, let’s take first a look at the death and destruction caused by Daenerys Targaryen during the sack of King’s Landing.
5. Viserys Targaryen’s death
Viserys Targaryen was a vile person and hated by everyone and for the right reasons. He was a bad brother and a bad human being as well. He was selfish and self-centered and he traded his sister to the Dothraki so that he would get an army to conquer Westeros. Daenerys certainly can’t be blamed for wanting her brother to be dead, but the important thing that seems a bit worrisome is her lack of emotions as she watched him die a horrific death. She didn’t even flinch while that was happening and looking back it definitely was one of the earliest indicators.
4. Crucifixion of the Masters
One of Daenerys’ traits that was overlooked throughout the series was her penchant for brutality over diplomacy and we have seen it happen multiple times throughout the series but it was always overlooked as she was one of the good guys. One of the biggest examples was when she decided to crucify the masters of Meereen even when she was advised against it.
She even ended up crucifying people like Hizdahr Zo Loraq’s father, a person who spoke out against the crime that Daenerys ended up killing him for.

3. The threats at the gates of Qarth
Daenerys and her supporters crossed the Red Waste and had to suffer a lot of casualties and if Qarth didn’t let them in, all of them would’ve definitely died. So we know that she was desperate to enter Qarth and maybe she was just trying to intimidate the Thirteen into letting her through the gates of Qarth.
However, it says a lot of Daenerys and her nature that the moment it was certain that she would die, her first reaction was to threaten to burn cities to the ground and it definitely wasn’t an one off incident as that ended up becoming a theme for her as the show progressed. Whenever she was in trouble or in a difficult situation, her first thought was mass destruction.
2. The attack on the Lannister and Tarly forces
Daenerys was in a war with Cersei and we know that you can’t be soft during such situations and you have to ensure that you take all the necessary steps to ensure that you win, even if it means that you have to eliminate the enemy. However, it was very clear that Daenerys was frustrated by the way Cersei was out foxing her and Dany was clearly choosing revenge over common sense when she attacked the Lannister and Tarly forces.
Daenerys made sure that she burned the supplies that the Lannisters and Tarly’s had looted from Highgarden, instead of just defeating her enemies and using the supplies for her own forces or for the people of Westeros as everyone knew by then that Winter had started. This is a big foreshadowing that Daenerys was more concerned with power than thinking about what would be better for her subjects.
1. Burning of the Tarlys
The Loot Train Attack ended up with the death of Randyll and Dickon Tarly after Daenerys ordered Drogon to burn them and it was one of the most obvious foreshadowing of Daenerys’ dark turn before the final season started. It was clear that she would kill anyone who didn’t consider her to be their queen, regardless of who they were if they would be used as bargaining chips to gain a leverage.
During season 1 when Ned Stark found out about Joffrey’s true parents, Cersei did everything to prevent Ned Stark from causing any damage but even she had the sense to not kill him as he was more valuable as a hostage but Joffrey being Joffrey, ignored his mother’s advice and ordered Ned Stark’s execution and we know what happened after that.
By ignoring Tyrion’s advice and killing the Tarly’s, Daenerys showed that she wasn’t that different from Joffrey.
What are your thoughts about these 5 events and do let us know in the comments if there are other significant events that foreshadowed Daenerys Targaryen becoming a villain?
